Background of the Study

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a pervasive issue, with the media playing a crucial role in shaping public perception and policy responses. In Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, media practitioners face ethical challenges when reporting GBV, such as balancing victims' privacy with public interest and avoiding sensationalism. Ethical reporting is critical to ensuring that coverage raises awareness, encourages justice, and fosters societal change without re-traumatizing survivors or perpetuating stereotypes. Studies have highlighted the need for sensitivity, accuracy, and adherence to ethical guidelines in GBV reporting to protect victims and ensure responsible journalism (Adebayo et al., 2023; Musa & Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines the ethical dilemmas faced by journalists in Lafia, exploring their impact on media practices and public discourse.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Reporting on GBV presents ethical dilemmas, including the potential for victim shaming, privacy violations, and misrepresentation of facts. In Lafia, journalists often lack training in ethical reporting standards, leading to coverage that may inadvertently harm victims or trivialize their experiences. Additionally, societal stigma and cultural taboos surrounding GBV further complicate journalists' efforts to report responsibly (Okoro & Bello, 2023; Yusuf, 2024). This study addresses these challenges, highlighting the need for improved ethical frameworks in GBV reporting.
